    Is there a way to convert this into a file compatible with Windows Media Player, or do you have suggestions on a system that is compatible with mkv files? I tried the given default, Windows Video Maker, and all it came out as was a 7 second blank video.

    A common setup is to download and install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) which comes with Media Player Classic.

    Once installed you should be able to play the majority of video files you find to download on the web using either normal Windows Media Player or MPC.
